Valaste Waterfall: The Majesty of Nature in Ida-Viru County

Valaste Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Baltics, with a height of about 30 meters. It is located near the village of Ontika, just a short distance from the Gulf of Finland. This natural wonder has become one of the main attractions of northeastern Estonia, drawing visitors year-round.

What makes Valaste special is not only its impressive height but also its geological setting. The water plunges from a high coastal cliff, revealing rock layers that are hundreds of millions of years old. It is a natural “geology textbook,” where visitors can clearly see the history of the Earth written in stone.

In winter, Valaste transforms into a frozen fairytale. The waterfall turns into a cascade of giant icicles and sparkling formations, attracting photographers and nature lovers. In summer, it offers a narrower but powerful stream that falls into a deep gorge, surrounded by lush greenery.

For visitors, the site is equipped with a safe viewing platform and a well-maintained hiking trail that leads along the Ontika cliffs. The coastal landscape here is among the most dramatic in Estonia and is perfect for hiking, photography, and quiet reflection.

Valaste is part of a wider tourist route in Ida-Viru County. A visit to the waterfall can easily be combined with trips to Narva, Narva-Jõesuu, or Lake Peipus.

Standing before Valaste Waterfall, one feels the timeless power of nature. It is not just a sightseeing stop, but a reminder of the beauty, strength, and constant transformation of our natural world.
